Whitehall marks the most northern point of the NY Canal System and the
beginning of the Champlain Canal. There are 11 locks with lock #12 at Whitehall and lock #1 at Troy, NY. A federal
controlled lock downstream (south) from lock #1 was built to control the level of the Hudson River. During the winter months the water level in the Hudson can be lowered 12 feet or more which controls ice flow and ensures the river stay open to commerce. The majority of small marinas, including Lock1 Marina where we stayed, are mud holes during the winter months.

Ate at the Finch & Chub Restaurant, a gourmet restaurant that lived up to it's reputation, which served fine food and better cold beer.
Typical lock in the Champlain Canal. The average lift height (water level difference from one end of the lock to the other) was about 16 feet totaling some 300 feet in total. The lock shown below was one of the smaller locks with about a 12 foot lift.
