Coinjock-Bellhaven-Oriental, NC

After leaving Portsmouth we arrived at the Coinjock Marina (about 50 miles) at 2:30 PM. A little town in NC along the intracoastal with a population of about 50. Nice restaurant, nice people but we knew all of them within 3 hours. Had a mechanic make some small repairs to get the fresh water system functional, nothing major.

Crossing Albemarle sound. During the last few days numerous people have told us how Albemarle Sound can be very nasty. I guess we got lucky because the sound was flat as a pancake when Sue and I made the crossing.

Beautiful canal systems through NC. The water is very coffee colored from the excessive amounts of tanic acid from the floral growth.

Left Coinjock, NC and traveled to Belhaven, NC. Another one-horse town along the intracoastal. Sue and I took a little stroll down main street at 5:00 in search of a restaurant or diner of some type and found this abandoned town quite eerie. We were the only people or cars on the street. Felt like an abandoned movie set.

Ate dinner, getting a beer was out of the question, swat mosquitos and retired early in anticipation of casting off in the early AM.

Continued to travel south and decided to stop at Oriental Marina Oriental, NC. What a nice place. There were people, restaurants, a swimming pool, tiki bars, gift shops and many other signs of life. Most of the people here are local to NC and Oriental Marina had been designated as the marina of choice for the summer and became a hangout for local boaters wanting a two or three nite mini-vacation.

Manhattan, NY

Traveling south down the Hudson River near the southeast end of Manhattan we approached Newport Marina in Jersey City. Quite a nice marina run by a couple from Rhode Island. Met Kate and Paul at the Westin Hotel, where we had booked rooms, and headed out on a watertaxi to a Yankee's and Red Sox game. The consierge at the hotel directed us to the wrong wharf to catch the water taxi, missed the taxi, could not get tickets to the game for less than $300, decided to blow the game off so we spent the afternoon in Hard Rock Cafe air conditioned bar that served food and a thousand TV's and we could hear the roar from the stadium.

Spent the late evening at Michael Anthony's, the marina bar. Little did I know that Paul foraged the streets of Jersey City at 3:00 AM for a steak and cheese sandwich. A picture taken from our boat of the Empire State building below.

Kingston, NY

The trip from Catskill was a very short one (about 20 miles) so we anchored, cleaned boat, read and generally recovered from our stop in Catskill. Arrived in Kingston at about 4:00 PM that afternoon, tied up and realized our battery charger had died, the A/C was not functional and we had no reservations nor could we find a room. It was hot, buggy, rainy I thought Sue was going to fly home. It was really a night from hell so we went over to Ship to Shore Restaurant to have as many drinks as it would take to survive this night. The next day I got a charger. The A/C, however, was not working and luckily the air had cooled off the rain stopped and the bugs went home.
